RESUMO

Introduction: Pathogenic bacteria in the oral cavity or a physiological microbiome imbalance can cause or maintain disease. Thus, this work examined a novel betadine-saline combination for antibacterial and antifungal activities. Materials and Methods: This study was in vitro. Betadine, saline, and their mixtures were tested for Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus (gram-positive), Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Aspergillus niger (gram-negative). Pour plate and disc diffusion methods were used to test CFUs, DZI, and RZI for various agent combinations. Results: For Lactobacillus acidophilus, Betadine 90% + saline 10% had the greatest DZI and RZI at 24 and 12 mm, respectively. For E. coli, Betadine 50% + saline 50% had the highest at 16 and 8 mm. Betadine 60% + saline 40% had 14 mm RZI and the highest antifungal activity. Conclusion: The novel betadine-saline antibacterial and antifungal combination performed well. In vivo research should confirm the existing findings.

RESUMO

Objective: This systematic review examines the efficacy and biocompatibility of orthodontic clear aligner tooth aligners constructed from polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PeT-G), polypropylene (PP), polycarbonate (PC), thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs), and ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA). Materials and Methods: To find relevant papers published through September 2021, PubMed was searched extensively. Randomized clinical trials (RCTs) and observational studies assessing the effectiveness and biocompatibility of the aligner materials were included. Data were extracted independently, and the quality of included research was appraised using relevant procedures. The research variability necessitated a narrative synthesis. Results: Five studies were included for comparison. All materials were biocompatible; however, PeT-G and EVA aligners caused the least tissue irritation. Patients preferred TPU aligners for initial comfort and PeT-G aligners for transparency and endurance. Conclusion: Biocompatible PeT-G, PP, PC, TPU, and EVA tooth aligners fix malocclusions. Aligner materials should be chosen based on patient preferences, treatment goals, and material qualities. For stronger proof, a longer-term study is needed.

Objective: This study examined the glenoid fossa in Class II and Class III malocclusions with mandibular retrusion and protrusion. Materials and Methods: A retrospective investigation examined 60 Class II and 60 Class III cephalometric radiographs. Cephalometric landmarks and glenoid fossa measurements were taken. Statistical analysis contrasted the two malocclusion groups' glenoid fossas. Results: Class II malocclusion had a much lower mean Sella-Nasion-Condylion (SNCd) angle (glenoid fossa sagittal position) than Class III (14.6° ± 1.9). Class II malocclusion had a lower mean Sella-Nasion-Gonion (SNGo) angle (32.5° ± 4.3) than Class III (36.2° ± 3.9). The SNCd angle and SNGo angle in both groups demonstrated a negative correlation, demonstrating a relationship between the glenoid fossa and the mandibular sagittal axis. Conclusion: The glenoid fossa location differs significantly between Class II malocclusion with mandibular retrusion and Class III with protrusion. Class II malocclusion has a posterior glenoid fossa, while Class III has a less posterior one. Understanding these links may help patients receive more personalized treatment.

Background: Nanosized antibacterial agents can be used to prevent biofilm buildup on orthodontic appliances and auxiliaries, limiting microbial adherence and preventing caries. Nanoparticles (NPs) can enhance the antibacterial properties of orthodontic materials due to their smaller particle size and larger surface area. Materials and Methods: The study's material analysis was divided into four groups, numbered I through IV, using Transbond XT Primer as a control and modifying group I by adding various antibacterial agents. 98.1 g of mutans-sanguis agar was dissolved in 1,000 ml of warm distilled water and autoclaved for 15 minutes at 121°C and 15 lb pressure. 176 disk specimens of 6 mm in diameter were created, sterilized in an autoclave, and heated to 60°C in a hot air oven for 1 hour. Ten milliliters of primer containing different antimicrobial agents was applied to the sterilized disks. Four petri plates were used for each concentration, with 16 disks in each group. 44 petri plates in all were utilized. Results: The orthodontic primer modified by the addition of antibacterial agents showed a significantly increased antimicrobial activity, and nanobenzalkonium chloride (BAC) at 5% concentration showed the highest antimicrobial efficacy among all groups. Nanohydroxyapatite showed the least. Conclusion: Within the confines of the current investigation, it was determined that the addition of antibacterial agents had significantly higher antimicrobial activity and BAC at 5% concentration had the highest antimicrobial efficacy of all the groups.

Objective: This study used spectrophotometry to examine how staining beverages affect the color stability of three commercial composite materials (nanohybrid composite (A), bulk fill composite (B), and flowable composite (C)) over time. Materials and Methods: Composite discs were randomly divided into groups. The specimens were kept in coffee, tea, red wine, and cola for 14 days at 37°C in the dark. At baseline, 7 days, and 14 days, spectrophotometers measured color. Calculated and analyzed color differences (E). Results: Staining beverages changed the color of all composites. Composite material A had the best color stability, whereas material C stained beverages the most. Red wine and coffee discolored composites most. Discoloration increased over the 14-day immersion period. Conclusion: Composite materials with better color stability were material A. Red wine and coffee discolored composites most. When choosing restorative materials, dentists should consider composite materials' color stability for long-lasting, visually acceptable results.

Introduction: The material that is currently available on the psychological issues that doctors deal with is restricted to a few national surveys and certain particular hospital surveys. The motive of the current study was to define the mental health status of medical as well as surgical professionals working in the public and private sectors of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India. Methodology: A self-reported questionnaire survey was used in an observational cross-sectional study to appraise the mental health state of both private and public medical practitioners. The Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10) by William C. Menninger was applied. Results: The majority of study participants experienced psychological anguish, showing a substantial difference in the total level of psychological distress. When the Wellinger's Distress and the Kesslers Distress tools were compared, it was found that there was a substantial difference for all the variables taken into account in the current study, including gender, experience, marital status, children, and occupation, designation, and sector of work. Conclusion: Stress and burnout were more prevalent among medical specialists with lower yearly income, young ages, and fewer years of practice. Clinicians and policymakers must be proactive in creating programes that help healthcare professionals cope with stress and burnout.

In forensic, odontologic, genetic, and anthropological aspects, odontometric and osteologic features have long been a valuable source. The goal of this research was to correlate both the osteologic and odontometric characteristics to determine the most accurate approach for determining gender. A retrospective study involving 1000 adults, with equal gender distribution, was carried out utilizing digital panoramic radiography. The archives were searched for radiographic images of the subjects that were procured for the various procedures that ranged from implantations to rehabilitations. The measurement process was carried out with Image-Pro. There was a noticeable gender difference in the mesodistal breadth, which ranged from 17 to 47. Asymmetry of the lower jaw was considerable in both genders, as was gender variance in osseologic characteristics including ramus diameter and gonial angle. The two groups of attributes exhibited a substantial positive predictive value and thus can be used indetermining gender.

Introduction: The orthodontic appliances have been known to accelerate enamel loss due to various reasons. Since there are few studies supporting the role of the nano-HAP in the mineralization of the demineralized tooth surfaces, the current study compared nano-HAP's capacity to remineralize the demineralized enamel layer surrounding braces at various concentration levels. Materials and Procedures: This investigation involved 60 healthy permanent premolars that had just been excised. All specimens had 3M-Unitek brackets glued to their buccal surfaces. The samples were artificially demineralized and divided into three groups. The control group, Toothpaste ApaCare, and ApaCareTM varnish. Before and after remineralization, selected samples from each group were analyzed using a "Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)" and evaluated using "Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis (EDAX)." Spectrometer and profilometer were used for the study of surface and the color. Statistics were used to analyze the outcomes. The threshold for significance was fixed at 0.05. Results: After remineralization by nano-HAP, there was a significant rise (P < 0.001) in both calcium and phosphorus levels. This was picked up by EDAX, and SEM verified it. When compared to the control group, the nano-HAP application greatly improved the color measurements in the study groups (P < 0.001), and it also resulted in a significant decrease in surface roughness (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Our study's results showed that nano-HAP could be successful in restoring demineralized enamel around brackets, reducing the surface roughness and color of the enamel surface.

Introduction: The bleaching of the teeth is known to reduce the bonding of the orthodontic brackets. Hence, this in vitro study was piloted to analyze if there was any variance between the teeth that were and were not bleached when the adhesive boosters were used and for its effect on the shear bond strength. Materials and Procedures: Hundred premolars (maxillary) that had been excised were randomly split into two groups: bleached teeth and unbleached teeth. The bleaching agent was gel composed of 22% carbamide peroxide. Maxillary premolar brackets were bonded, and each group was subdivided as control and adhesive booster Enhance LC groups. A universal testing device was used for debonding. The SBS thus recorded was compared for the subgroups and groups. Results: Significant variance was obtained for between the groups and between the subgroups. Higher bond strength was for the non-bleached teeth than the bleached teeth and was seen in the adhesive booster subgroup than the control group. Conclusion: In summary, adhesive boosters dramatically raised the shear bond strength of teeth irrespective of the bleaching. Further in vivo studies are suggested.

Aim: The purpose of this study was to assess the short-term perioral soft tissue variations of the lips before and after treatment cases in 15 patients with bi-maxillary protrusion using treated lateral cephalograms who had already achieved active growth. Methodology: Fifteen pre-treatment and post-treatment lateral cephalometric radiographs of 18-25-year-old individuals with bimaxillary protrusion treated with all four 1st premolar extractions were accessed from the records. From the reference planes and landmarks, 13 horizontal, 10 vertical, and 2 angular measurements were noted. Statistical comparisons between pre-treatment and post-treatment measurements were measured by a paired t-test to assess the importance of the mean variations at the predetermined significance level. Pearson's correlation coefficient (R) was utilized to assess the strength and significance of the linear relationship between the mean differences for paired (dependent and independent) variables. Results: Pearson's correlation exhibited a noteworthy positive association between the horizontal changes in upper lip position and the horizontal changes of the upper incisor tip point (H-tU1) (R = 0.748), the upper incisor cervical point (H-cU1) (R = 0.707), the lower incisor tip point (H-tL1) (R = 0.839), and the lower incisor cervical point (H-cL1) (R = 0.767). This indicated that upper lip changes are the aftermath of the retraction of the upper and lower incisors in class I bi-maxillary protrusion malocclusion. Conclusion: Thick upper lips showed more retraction of the upper lip in correlation with retraction of the incisors as compared with thin lips. The lower incisor cervical point displayed the strongest association with lower lip retraction.

Quantitation of mHLA-DR and nCD64 is useful in understanding the dysregulated host response. The down regulation of HLA-DR expression on the circulating monocytes (mHLA-DR) is associated with anti-inflammatory response, and an increased expression of CD64 on neutrophil surface (nCD64) is associated with pro-inflammatory response. Quantitation of these antigen expression using beads (QuantiBRITE™ PE) is a precision technique. These beads are reported to be stable for 24 h after reconstitution. We report the results of our investigation examining the stability of QuantiBRITE PE beads over a period of 4-week post-reconstitution. The data suggest that reconstituted QuantiBRITE PE beads, if stored in dark at 2-8 °C, can be effectively used for up to 2 weeks for determining nCD64 and mHLA-DR antibody bound per cell (ABC) values.

RESUMO

Modified Bentall's procedure done as part of the primary repair in Laubry-Pezzi syndrome is very rarely described in the literature. We present a case of a 33-year-old man with a subpulmonic venticular septal defect, aneurysmal dilatation of the aortic root and ascending aorta, with an associated patent ductus arteriosus, corrected by the incorporation of Yacoub's techique for ventricular septal defect closure with a modified Bentall's procedure and transpulmonary patent ductus arteriosus ligation. The postoperative course was unremarkable. Early follow-up reports show good biventricular function without residual ventricular septal defect or iatrogenic ventricular outflow tract obstructions.

RESUMO

A 32-year-old female underwent mitral valve replacement with total chordal preservation (Miki's technique) using 26 mm (1M) Starr-Edward prosthesis (SEP) in 1988. The patient was in NYHA class-I until 2001. She progressed to NYHA class-III with paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnoea. Transthoracic echocardiogram showed increased prosthetic valve gradient, and cardiac catheterization confirmed the findings. Intraoperatively, the poppet movement in the cage was found to be restricted due to the preserved subvalvular apparatus entrapping the poppet inside the prosthetic valve cage.
